Improving road network in Sacramento
When saving your work, please leave the default comment but add what you actually mapped, for example "added buildings and a residential road".
Imagery

Bing Satellite, Strava heat map, Mapbox telemetry

Workflow:

  • Load Bing Satellite Imagery as base map in JOSM
  • Load Strava Heatmap of cycling and walking for reference : click this link to load in JOSM
  • Load Mapbox Telemetry - load in JOSM
  • Load the selected block of tasking manager in JOSM and add/realign and improve highways as per Bing satellite imagery
  • Use inverse filter highway=motorway|trunk|primary|secondary|motorway_link|*_junction|tertiary|trunk_link|residential|unclassified for showing all types of road (except service roads)
  • Use inverse filter highway=motorway|trunk|primary|secondary|*link|motorway_link|tertiary for showing major roads
  • Use inverse filter highway=residential|unclassified for showing minor roads
  • Split the block into smaller blocks if the data is too huge
  • Add oneway=yes for link roads.
  • Use reverse R to change the direction of the OSM way according to the direction of vehicular traffic.
  • Split roads (P) into dual carriageways (shift+P) whenever you see a physical separation. Be careful not to break route relations while splitting
  • Keep uploading and updating (cmd+U) data frequently to avoid conflicts.

Road classification - Road classification for link roads is decided based on which road you are branching out/in. Also Look through road markings or oneway directions to decide the oneway direction. Example: If there is a link road running from secondary to tertiary that link road gets secondary_link tag.
